Domus Dorpatensis: the story behind

Hi,

Just a quick insight into historical residence we are locating for the Project Seminar in Tartu. It’s called Domus Dorpatensis. The whole program takes place here at Domus Dorpatensis, including coffee breaks and overnights (for the part of the group).

So, please, have a look. 🙂

Project Seminar of Bridge It! takes part in the building called Domus Dorpatensis. The seminar program is fully anticipated in this building as participants are partly located also here.

Domus Dorpatensis (DD), Foundation for Science and Liberal Arts, is located on 7 Ülikooli Street, in the centre of Tartu, just behind the town hall. The oldest part of the building, was built of stone back in 1755, it has preserved its mansard roof and Baroque window in the roof.

From 1849 until the Second World War, the house belonged to the family of Baltic Germans by the name of von Rücker. During the Soviet period, in addition to apartments, the building housed the store grain and workshops shoemaker and tailor. After Estonia became independent again, he returned home to the family von Rücker. Since 2002, the building belongs to the fund Domus Dorpatensis. Today, on the first floor there are shops and a cafe on the second floor – Domus Dorpatensis, and on the third floor – guest apartment.

This is how the seminar room looks like inside.

Exploring Domus Dorpatensis, you can find a Red room. Sounds mysterious, doesn’t it?  🙂

This Red room tells us about the original owners of the building. There is a Red room with 6 portraits of original owners of the residence. They were those 6 sisters, who have been living in this Domus house before the Second World War and, probably, hosting people there last century.

BTW, ladies from Domus Dorpatensis administration are pretty much amazed with our Simpsons’ hang-outs.

Stay curious and take care of you,

Yulia
